I finally got to use the camera for the reason I bought it!

Two weeks ago we finally had some nice clouds and I got to use the Nikon for what I bought it for, long exposures. You may remember that with my Canon camera when I did long exposures I would get a lot of color noise in the shadows that was impossible to remove in post processing. Especially when it was warm out.

We had good clouds one afternoon and when I went out the temperatures were in the mid to high 80’s, typically the temperatures that made my problem more pronounced on the Canon cameras. But this time I had the Nikon D850. Using my 15 stop Singh-Ray Neutral Density filter I was shooting exposures of 4 minutes, to capture movement in the clouds.

Here is what a typical 1/160 sec exposure looked like that afternoon.

Here is the same composition with a 4 min exposure.

Here is the same file converted to Black and White with Topaz BW Effects 2. I find the black and white images to be stronger when taking these types of images, unless it is closer to sunrise or sunset, when the clouds have more interesting color.

In the past I would have noticed the color noise in the shadows on the right side of the image.  Here is a 100% crop of that section and you can see there is no noise at all and I did not use Long Exposure Noise Reduction in the camera, thus saving me a 4 min processing time.

Here are a few more comparisons of the “normal” exposure versus the long exposure.

Its days like these that make me very grateful that I made the switch!
